Pampas Deer Conservation Biology

Venado macho

When Charles Darwin visited Uruguay  in 1832,  was surprised with the large groups of this beautiful deer that inhabit in the open countryside.

In Uruguay in 2022, (190 years later), the species is scarcely known because remains in restricted and isolated areas in the countryside.

The area in which the species currently remain is in two localities; one at the North of country in Arerunguá that encompass 180.000 ha, and the other located in the East at Los Ajos 50.000 ha.  Furthermore in 1980 a captive population was establish with the goal to initiate a breeding centre ECFA (Estación de Cria de Fauna Autóctona).
